Select the Right ANSI Chain Pitch

The ANSI chain numbering system follows a logical code: the first one or two digits of the chain number represent the pitch in eighths of an inch. So ANSI #40 = 4 × ⅛" = ½" pitch (12.7 mm). ANSI #80 = 8 × ⅛" = 1" pitch (25.4 mm). The suffix "H" means Heavy Series — a wider plate than standard for higher load capacity at the same pitch.

Disclaimer: ANSI vs BS Interchangeability: Even though ANSI #40 and BS 08B share the same 12.7 mm pitch, they are NOT directly interchangeable. The roller diameter and inner link dimensions differ. Always confirm your machine's standard before ordering.

The fastest way to identify the ANSI pitch you need is to read the side plate marking on your existing chain. The number stamped on the plate (e.g., "60", "80H", "100-2") directly corresponds to the ANSI chain designation. If the chain is too worn to read, measure the pitch — the centre-to-centre distance between two adjacent pins — in millimetres or inches, then cross-reference to the ANSI pitch table above. The "H" suffix designates the American Heavy Series Roller Chain — a chain with the same pitch as its standard equivalent but with thicker link plates and a larger pin diameter. For example, ANSI #60H has the same 19.05 mm pitch as standard #60, but its breaking load is approximately 22% higher. Heavy Series is specified when high shock loads, elevated working loads, or long service intervals are required. No — a duplex (two-strand) sprocket requires a duplex chain, and a triplex sprocket requires a triplex chain. A Triple Strand Roller Chain or Double Strand Roller Chain is a set of two or three simplex chains joined side-by-side with common pins, and the sprocket teeth must match each strand exactly. If you order a multi-strand chain, always specify the strand count clearly — and we will supply the matching multi-strand sprocket from our diamond sprocket range.

A Double Pitch Roller Drive Chain has exactly double the pitch of its standard equivalent — so a C2040 has the same roller and link plate width as ANSI #40, but the pitch is 25.4 mm (1") instead of 12.7 mm (½"). Double pitch chains are designed for slow-speed, long-centre conveying applications where reducing chain weight and cost is important and speed is low enough that the larger pitch does not cause vibration. They are commonly used in storage conveyors, overhead trolley lines, and long-distance material transport.
